Promotors: prof.dr. J. strackee and prof. dr. H. Bartelink

Working experience:

Netherlands Cancer Institute, Antoni van Leeuwenhoekhuis, Amsterdam
1986 Ph.D. student. Development of applications of an electronic portal imaging device for evaluation of external radiation therapy of cancer patients. Detection of radiation fioeld edges, measurement of deviations in the patient setup for treatment, decision rules for correcting the treatment setup. Most important results: technology and procedures for high-dose high-precision radiation therapy for prostate cancer patients.
Netherlands Forensic Institute, The Hague
1992 Forensic Scientist for department of handwriting investigations. Evaluation of a system, that was used by the German Bundeskriminalamt and the United States Secret Services, for automated handwriting classification and writer recognition.
Initiator and leader of projects aiming at forensic applications of digital image analysis and pattern recognition: document analysis, computer assisted investigation and comparison of handwriting, cartridges, shoe prints, impressions and sole designs, tool marks and extacy tablets.
Co-promotor for Ph.D. graduation of Zeno Geradts. Thesis: “Content based information retrieval in forensic image databases”. University of Utrecht. Promotor: prof.dr.ir. M. Viergever
1997 Forensic Scientist for department of digital technology: forensic video investigations
Participation in a project aiming at applications of computer simulations for forensic investigation of car accidents
2002 Group leader for Image analysis and Biometrics. This group performs forensic investigations in three fields of expertise: analogue and digital video technology, photogrammetry and 3-dimensional computer models, and facial image comparison. The group acts as a centre of expertise on biometric systems for government agencies.
2006 leader of a project aiming at analysis of large amounts of surveillance and phone cam video footage for reconstructon of people movements just before, during and after a disaster

Other relevant activities:

since 2000 chairperson of the ENFSI Digital Imaging Working Group. ENFSI stands for European Network of Forensic Science Institutes. (http://www.forensic.to/webhome/enfsidiwg)
active in national working groups for imaging technology, photogrammetry and crime scene recording, biometric identification
active as a teacher in bachelor and master education programs in forensic sciences
2006 presented a 4 day workshop on forensic image analysis for the forensic institute of China in Beijing on invitation
